Barcelona is a beautiful city with plenty of things to see and do, but if you have some extra time, there are several fantastic day trips that you can take from the city. In this blog, we’ll explore three of the most popular day trips from Barcelona: Montserrat Monastery, Girona, and Costa Brava. Each of these destinations offers a unique and unforgettable experience, so pack your bags and get ready for an adventure!

Montserrat Monastery: A Spiritual and Natural Wonder

Montserrat Monastery is located about an hour’s drive from Barcelona, in the mountains of Montserrat. The monastery is known for its beautiful natural surroundings and its rich spiritual and cultural history. Visitors can take a scenic train ride up to the monastery or drive up the winding mountain road. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of the mountains and the monastery’s impressive architecture.

Exploring the Monastery

The monastery is open to visitors every day of the week, and there are plenty of things to see and do. The basilica is the heart of the monastery, and it houses the famous Black Madonna, a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary that has been venerated for centuries. Visitors can attend a mass or a choral performance in the basilica, or explore the museum, which showcases art and artifacts from the monastery’s history.

Hiking in Montserrat

One of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of Montserrat is by taking a hike. There are several hiking trails that lead through the mountains, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The trails vary in difficulty, so there’s something for everyone. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water!

Girona: A Medieval Gem

Girona is a charming medieval town located about an hour and a half from Barcelona. The town is known for its beautiful architecture, winding streets, and rich history. Visitors can explore the old town’s well-preserved buildings, ancient walls, and stunning cathedral.

Walking the Walls

One of the highlights of Girona is the ancient walls that surround the old town. Visitors can walk along the walls, enjoying panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside. The walk takes about an hour, and it’s a great way to get a sense of the town’s history and geography.

Exploring the Jewish Quarter

Girona has a rich Jewish history, and the old Jewish Quarter is a must-visit. Visitors can explore the narrow streets and alleys, admiring the beautiful architecture and learning about the town’s Jewish heritage. The Jewish Museum of Girona is also located in the quarter and offers an excellent overview of the history and culture of the Jewish community in Girona.

Costa Brava: Beaches and Scenery

Costa Brava is a beautiful stretch of coastline located about two hours from Barcelona. The region is known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rugged scenery. Visitors can relax on the beach, explore the coastal towns, or take a scenic drive along the winding coastal road.

Relaxing on the Beaches

The beaches of Costa Brava are some of the most beautiful in the world. Visitors can choose from a wide range of beaches, from secluded coves to bustling resort towns. Some of the most popular beaches include Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, and Calella de Palafrugell. Whether you want to swim, sunbathe, or just relax and enjoy the scenery, there’s a beach for you.

Scenic Coastal Drives

One of the best ways to experience the scenery of Costa Brava is by taking a scenic coastal drive. The winding coastal road offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the rugged coastline. Visitors can stop at charming coastal towns, such as Cadaques and Portlligat, or explore the stunning Cap de Creus Natural Park.

Exploring Cap de Creus

Cap de Creus is a beautiful natural park located on the easternmost point of Spain. The park is known for its rugged coastline, rocky cliffs, and stunning sea views. Visitors can take a hike through the park, explore the ancient ruins of the Sant Pere de Rodes monastery, or enjoy a picnic with a view.
