Holy Week in Barcelona

April 2023 is a great time to visit Barcelona to experience Holy Week, which is the week leading up to Easter Sunday. Barcelona is known for its grand Easter celebrations during this week, including processions, masses, and concerts. The highlight of the week is the Palm Sunday procession, which takes place on April 9th, and features the blessing of the palms and the reading of the Passion of Christ. Another significant event is the Holy Thursday Mass, which takes place on April 13th and commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples.

Easter Sunday Celebrations

On April 16th, Barcelona will celebrate Easter Sunday, which is the most important day in the Christian calendar. The city is home to many beautiful churches, such as the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar and the Cathedral of Barcelona, which hold special services and events on Easter Sunday. You can attend mass, listen to music performances, and even see traditional Catalan dancing in the streets.

Traditional Easter Foods in Barcelona

During Holy Week and Easter, Barcelona’s restaurants and bakeries offer traditional Easter dishes and sweets. One must-try dish is “mona de Pascua,” a sweet bread decorated with chocolate eggs and
figures. Another popular Easter food is “bacalao,” or salt cod, which is often served in a stew or with potatoes. You can also find “torrijas,” a traditional Spanish dessert made with bread, milk, and sugar,
which is similar to French toast.

Easter Monday and the “La Mona” Tradition

Easter Monday, also known as “Día de la Mona,” is a public holiday in Barcelona, and it’s a day for families and friends to get together and enjoy “la mona.” This is a traditional Easter cake that’s decorated with chocolate eggs, figures, and other sweets. In many families, children receive “la mona” as a gift from their godparents, and they spend the day with their loved ones, having picnics or
going on outings.

Wrap Up: Celebrate Easter in Barcelona with Rich
