Niklas Leistner, a 24-year-old from Germany, recently graduated with a Master’s in Marketing and Communication at ESEI International Business School in Barcelona. His journey shows how studying abroad can provide not only academic and professional growth but also unforgettable cultural experiences.
A Practical Approach to Learning
When reflecting on his studies, Niklas explained that his favourite part was the practical education style through project based learning. “My favourite part at ESEI was probably the real-life approach of learning. Always working in teams with fellow students to solve real tasks. It felt very close to working in a real marketing team, which I really liked.”
This emphasis on collaboration and applied projects is a hallmark of the programme, giving students the confidence to tackle challenges they will encounter in professional roles.
A Standout Project
One project that stood out for Niklas was his Master’s thesis. Together with his fellow German classmate, Thomas, he designed an app aimed at simplifying access to a German financial support programme for students.
“It was nice to actually develop a project which you believe in. We saw a gap in the market and created a solution we think could really make a difference.”
The project not only showcased his ability to combine creativity with problem-solving but also reflected the entrepreneurial mindset that ESEI encourages.
Life in Barcelona
For Niklas, living in Barcelona played an equally important role in shaping his experience. He described the city as both international and authentically Spanish.
“I met so many people from all over the world, from countries I never thought I’d visit. At the same time, you are able to experience Spanish culture. So these two were like amazing experiences to just get to know people from all over the world and still have the Spanish experience I was hoping for.”
This combination of cultural immersion and global networking makes Barcelona a truly unique city for international students.
Balancing Studies with a Remote Marketing Role
During his Master’s, he also gained valuable professional experience working as a Sales Marketing Manager for Yeronimo, a startup based in Munich that specialises in HR and compliance solutions.
Although the company is headquartered in Germany, Niklas was able to work remotely from Barcelona while completing his studies. This role allowed him to put into practice the marketing and communication skills he was learning at ESEI, bridging the gap between academic theory and professional application.
Niklas’ success in balancing his studies with a remote role at a dynamic startup highlights his adaptability, discipline and professional readiness. These qualities will continue to shape and strengthen his international career. Since completing his Master’s, he has been preparing for the next stage of his professional journey. He is now relocating to Innsbruck, Austria, where he has accepted a new position at Goldvorsorge as a Content Creator and Strategist.
Advice for Future Master’s Students
Looking back on his journey, Niklas had clear advice for new students starting their Master’s in Marketing and Communication in Barcelona.
“Enjoy your time. One year of Master’s sounds long but goes by quickly. Take every opportunity to go out, meet people, and collect as many experiences as you can. Don’t stay at home. Barcelona is one of the best cities in the world. Be passionate about the programme because if you really focus, you can learn a lot and gain valuable real-world experience.”
Tip Round-Up from Niklas
- Make the most of your time in Barcelona – Get out of the classroom, explore the city, meet people, and immerse yourself in the culture.
- Balance work and studies – Consider gaining professional experience while studying, as Niklas did working remotely for Yeronimo. This helps you apply your learning in real-world situations and develop valuable skills.
- Be proactive and passionate in your studies – Focus on your projects and assignments, as the skills you gain will be valuable in the real world.
