How to Network in Barcelona’s Startup Scene as a Student

  • Posted by Esei
  • Date 8 de December de 2025

Barcelona has become one of Europe’s most dynamic hubs for entrepreneurship and innovation. For students eager to connect with startups, investors, and fellow innovators, the city offers a unique environment where opportunities often begin with a simple conversation. Learning how to navigate this scene can give you a powerful head start in your career.

7 tips
How to Network in Barcelona’s Startup Scene as a Student

1. Start with Your University Network

Your first connections often come from within your own academic community. Here at ESEI International Business School we  frequently host guest lectures, learning walks and workshops where students can meet founders and professionals. Attend as many as possible and follow up with the speakers or organisers afterwards. A short LinkedIn message thanking them for their insights can go a long way in building a genuine connection.

2. Attend Local Startup Events

Barcelona’s calendar is filled with networking opportunities. Events such as 4YFN (Four Years From Now), Barcelona Tech Spirit, and Startup Grind Barcelona bring together founders, investors, and young professionals from around the world. Don’t just attend; prepare. Research who will be there, bring a concise pitch about yourself, and ask meaningful questions.

3. Join Co-Working Communities

Spaces like Aticco, Cloudworks, and OneCoWork are more than just offices. They are meeting points for entrepreneurs and creative professionals. Many host informal events, after-work gatherings, and panel discussions. Spending a few hours each week working from a co-working space can help you meet people who are building the kinds of companies you aspire to work with.

4. Use Online Platforms Wisely

LinkedIn remains one of the most effective tools for networking in Barcelona’s startup community. Follow local startup accelerators such as Barcelona Activa, SeedRocket, and Conector to stay informed about open events, job opportunities, and mentorship programmes. Engage thoughtfully with posts and share your own learning experiences to position yourself as an active participant in the local ecosystem.

5. Volunteer or Intern at Startup Events

Volunteering gives you behind-the-scenes access to the people who make things happen. Large-scale events like Mobile World Congress or smaller pitch nights often rely on volunteers to manage logistics. It’s an excellent way to meet founders and investors in a more personal setting, while gaining valuable insight into how events are run.

6. Learn the Art of Follow-Up

Networking is not just about meeting people; it’s about maintaining connections. After an event, reach out within 24 hours while your conversation is still fresh in their mind. Mention something specific you discussed to show genuine interest. Over time, nurture these relationships by sharing useful resources or inviting them for a casual coffee chat.

7. Blend Professionalism with Local Culture

Barcelona’s startup scene is global, but it’s also shaped by local culture. Relationships often develop through informal conversations over coffee or at networking meetups rather than formal business meetings. Approach people with openness and curiosity, and don’t underestimate the power of being authentic.

Tip Round-Up: How to Network in Barcelona’s Startup Scene

  1. Leverage your school connections – professors, classmates, and guest speakers can be valuable contacts.

  2. Attend major startup events such as 4YFN and Startup Grind Barcelona.

  3. Work from co-working spaces like Aticco or Cloudworks to meet founders and freelancers.

  4. Engage online with accelerators, investors, and startups on LinkedIn.

  5. Volunteer strategically at conferences and pitch nights to expand your network.

  6. Follow up promptly and personally after each interaction.

  7. Respect local customs – be approachable, polite, and genuinely curious.
