Best Hiking Spots Around Barcelona (Easy to Reach)

Barcelona is not only a vibrant city filled with culture, architecture and beaches, it is also surrounded by natural landscapes perfect for hiking. For students seeking a break from the urban environment, the region offers numerous trails that are easy to access and suitable for all levels of experience. Whether you are looking for a short day hike or a scenic route with breathtaking views, here are some of the best hiking spots around Barcelona.

  1. Montjuïc Hill
Located just a short walk from the city centre, Montjuïc is ideal for an easy urban hike. The hill offers well-marked paths, gardens, historic sites and stunning views of the harbour and city skyline. Along the way, you can visit the Montjuïc Castle, the Magic Fountain and several museums, making it perfect for a mix of activity and sightseeing.
  2. Collserola Natural Park
Collserola is Barcelona’s largest green area, stretching from the city to the surrounding mountains. The park has more than 100 kilometres of trails suitable for beginners and intermediate hikers. Highlights include the Tibidabo viewpoint, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city, and the Carretera de les Aigües, a mostly flat trail popular with walkers and cyclists alike.
  3. Parc de la Serralada de Marina
This park, located northeast of the city, offers quiet forest paths and gentle climbs suitable for an easy escape from urban life. Trails pass through pine forests, streams and small viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean.
  4. Garraf Natural Park
Southwest of Barcelona, Garraf Natural Park is known for its limestone hills, vineyards and Mediterranean vegetation. Several trails are accessible from nearby towns such as Sitges or Castelldefels. The park is ideal for moderate day hikes, offering a combination of coastal scenery, rural landscapes and small wildlife encounters.
  5. Montserrat
Montserrat is one of the most famous hiking destinations near Barcelona. While some trails can be challenging, there are easy routes suitable for beginners, such as the Sant Joan Funicular Trail or the paths around the monastery. The unique rock formations, monasteries and breathtaking vistas make Montserrat a memorable hiking experience within a one-hour train or car journey from the city.
  6. Costa Brava Coastal Trails
For those willing to travel slightly further, the Costa Brava coastline offers scenic and easy-to-access hikes. Routes around towns such as Blanes, Tossa de Mar or Calella de Palafrugell provide coastal views, sandy beaches and historic sites along relatively flat paths. These trails are perfect for combining a hike with a swim or local gastronomy.
  7. La Roca del Vallès Trails
Located just 30 minutes from Barcelona, La Roca del Vallès offers easy trails with rural and forested landscapes. The area is ideal for a half-day hike and is well suited for students looking for a short break in nature.

Tips for Hiking Around Barcelona

  • Transport: Most hiking spots are accessible by public transport, including trains, metro and buses.

  • Timing: Weekdays or early mornings are the best times to avoid crowds, especially at Montserrat and coastal trails.

  • Gear: Comfortable shoes, a water bottle and sun protection are essential. Even easy trails can become tiring in the heat.

  • Maps and Apps: Use online maps or hiking apps to follow trails safely. Many parks have marked paths and information boards.

  • Combine Activities: Many trails allow for sightseeing, photography, and cultural visits, making them suitable for a full day or half-day adventure.

Why Hiking Is Great for Students

Hiking near Barcelona offers an excellent way to recharge mentally and physically. It provides a break from studying and a chance to connect with nature, while also encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle.

Final Thoughts

Barcelona’s surroundings provide a diverse range of easy-to-reach hiking trails, from urban hills to coastal paths and mountain escapes. Whether you are a beginner or a regular hiker, the city offers natural retreats to suit all levels. Exploring these trails allows students to enjoy the unique landscapes around Barcelona while maintaining an active lifestyle.
