If you are living in Spain, one of the first administrative tasks on your list should be registering your address with the local city council. This registration is called the empadronamiento, and while it might sound like a bureaucratic formality, it is actually one of the most important documents you will need during your time in the country.
Many international students arrive in Barcelona without knowing what it is or why it matters. This guide covers everything you need to know.
What Is the Empadronamiento?
The empadronamiento is your official registration as a resident at a specific address in Spain. It is issued by the local council, known as the Ajuntament in Barcelona, and it records your presence in the municipality.
Think of it as telling the Spanish authorities: I live here, at this address, in this city. It does not give you the right to work or study in Spain. That is handled by your visa or residence permit. But it is a foundational document that unlocks a wide range of other processes.
Why Do You Need It?
The empadronamiento comes up more often than most students expect. Here are the situations where you will almost certainly need it:
Applying for or renewing your residence permit. The Spanish immigration authorities require proof of empadronamiento as part of most residence applications and renewals.
Opening a bank account. Many Spanish banks ask for it as proof of address before they will open an account for you.
Registering with a GP or accessing public health services. If you need to register with a local health centre, the empadronamiento is typically required.
Applying for certain scholarships or grants linked to your place of residence in Spain.
Accessing certain local government services and discounts available to Barcelona residents.
In short, the sooner you get it, the smoother the rest of your administrative life in Spain will be.
Can You Get One as a Student?
Yes. Both EU and non-EU students can register for an empadronamiento in Barcelona regardless of their nationality. You do not need a long-term residence permit to register. A valid student visa and a rental contract are enough to get started.
One important thing to note: not all landlords agree to allow empadronamiento at their property, particularly in short-term or tourist-style rentals. This is worth checking before you sign your rental contract, as it can save you a significant amount of difficulty later. We mention this in our guide to finding student housing in Barcelona, and it is one of the key questions to ask any potential landlord before you commit.
What Documents Do You Need?
The documents required are straightforward. You will need your passport or national identity card, your rental contract or a signed letter from your landlord confirming that you live at the property, and the completed registration form, which you can download from the Barcelona City Council website or pick up at the council office.
If your landlord is unwilling to provide a signed letter or formal contract, some offices will accept an alternative form of proof of residence, but it is always easier to have the standard documents ready.
How to Register: Step by Step
There are two ways to complete your empadronamiento in Barcelona.
In person at your local Oficina d’Atenció Ciutadana. Barcelona has several citizen attention offices spread across the city. You can find your nearest one on the Ajuntament de Barcelona website. You will need to book an appointment in advance, as walk-ins are not always accepted. Bring all your documents in their original form, along with photocopies of each. The process itself is usually quick once you are seen.
Online through the Ajuntament de Barcelona website. An online registration option is available for those with an electronic ID or a digital certificate. For most international students, the in-person route is simpler and more reliable.
Once your registration is processed, you will receive your certificate of empadronamiento, known as the volant d’empadronament in Catalan or the certificado de empadronamiento in Spanish. This is the document you will present when it is required.
How Long Does It Take?
Processing is generally quick. In many cases you will receive your certificate on the same day or within a few days of your appointment. The certificate is valid for three months for most official purposes, after which you may need to request a new one. Requesting an updated certificate is a simple process and can often be done online once you are already registered.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Your empadronamiento is tied to a specific address. If you move, you will need to update your registration with your new address. This is called a change of address, or cambio de domicilio, and follows a similar process to the original registration.
If you are living with other people, each person needs to register individually. You cannot register on behalf of a housemate.
The empadronamiento is not the same as your residency permit. It is a record of where you live, not a permission to live in Spain. Your visa or residency documentation handles that separately.
